Company Leadership


Matt Essex, M.S.

Essex is an accomplished and seasoned entrepreneur, teacher, researcher and public speaker in the areas of healthcare, wellness and active aging who desires to consistently embody a servant-leader in all facets of his life.

During the past decade in the healthcare industry, Essex has become well respected for his vision, creativity and passion. He and the healthcare endeavors he has been involved with have been nationally recognized by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Stanford University, Arizona State University, the City of Scottsdale and other groups.  Essex was named one of the top entrepreneurs in Arizona in 2007, and has been the focus of numerous editorials over his career for his dedication and passion for improving senior healthcare.

Essex was part of a research team that pioneered the the foundational research for strength regeneration and Sarcopenia prevention, in aging, and is considered one of the country’s foremost experts in this subject matter.  He holds a Master’s of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology and Wellness and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition.

ActiveRx is the culmination of his life’s work to redefine and redeem aging.


Michael Hutta

Hutta joined the ActiveRx Leadership Team in 2009 with nearly 20 years of management experience. He has been recognized as a dedicated mentor and team motivator throughout his career in categories that include real estate, financial services and executive consultancy.

He spent 13 years at Enterprise Holdings in various executive roles, including Regional Vice President of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, overseeing a $70 million division with 400 full-time employees at 50 locations. He has been a successful entrepreneur, and served as the Regional Vice President of Franchise Sales for the Real Estate Division of Better Homes and Garden, and as Managing Partner for Foothills Funding, LLC.

Hutta graduated from Springfield College with a Business Management degree, and studied abroad at Richmond College, London, England with a concentration in International Business.


Ryan Booher

Booher supports the ActiveRx leadership team by formulating and implementing policies and procedures to train and monitor the rapidly expanding network of ActiveRx regional developers and individual franchisees.

A former business owner himself, he works with franchise operators to ensure optimal financial performance at each ActiveRx Strengtherapy Center throughout the country.

Prior to joining ActiveRx in 2012, Booher was manager of an Apple Store in Scottsdale where he oversaw a staff of more than 140 employees and was responsible for ensuring world-class customer experiences for shoppers and operational excellence. Previously, he served for six years as a store manager and training facilitator for Starbucks.

Ryan is an alumnus of the School of Business at Arizona State University and has updated his academic training with numerous sales and leadership courses for more than a decade.

Dr. Wayne

Dr. Wayne T. Phillips, Ph.D., FACSM, CIC, CVS-FR

Dr. Phillips has been involved in the field of wellness for more than 35 years and is internationally recognized as a published researcher, author and speaker. He is a former Post-Doctoral Fellow at Stanford School of Medicine, Center for Research in Disease Prevention and Professor (now Professor Emeritus) at Arizona State University. Dr. Phillips is a nationally recognized teacher with extensive academic and professional credentials in wellness and health related behavior change.
