Franchising for a Purpose: Doing Well by Doing Good
May 7, 2013 | Matt D. Essex, Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Age-related health challenges are not inevitable. In fact, there is actually no scientific rationale for this to occur. At ActiveRx, our purpose is to redefine aging and the way people think about Aging. We are filling a void in the healthcare system, with the vision of becoming the nation’s largest and best provider of preventive (functional) senior healthcare and medically-supervised exercise.
"Age Ain't Nothing But a Number"

From the article:
McKinney native Tom Dickey has faced some life-changing experiences over the past few months that, up until November, came close to claiming his life.
The 70 year old lost his wife of 42 years to cancer. While caring for her, he watched his own health decline. Two falls and a broken heart later, Dickey found himself in a...
Deonza Thymes, M.D.: Building upon Opportunities to Help Others
Mar 1, 2013
Deonza Thymes, M.D., is an acute observer who wants to make a difference—traits that explain her attraction to study both sociology and pre-med as an undergraduate at UCLA, as well as her keen eye for finding unmet needs and opportunities to help others. ... During her residency, Thymes observed that many of the medical issues faced by aging adults could be largely avoided if only they were equipped to age successfully.

It is predicted that by the middle of this century, one of three adults will have diabetes. Although aerobic exercise is still typically prescribed as a non-pharmacological treatment to reduce the symptoms and incidence of this disease, at ActiveRx we know that strength training can also positively impact type 2 diabetes.

Strong Foundations
Last month, my long-term colleague Dr. Wayne Phillips, our Research Director and chairman of the ActiveRx Scientific Advisory Board, shared some interesting insights regarding Americans living longer. It is projected that one out of nine “Boomers” will live to see age 90! And our average life expectancy in the U.S. is 78 years—with women averaging 80.7 and men averaging 75.4 years. At the same time, unfortunately, chronic conditions like heart disease, arthritis and Type II diabetes are at an all-time high. Falls are now Public Enemy #1 among older adults—causing more premature deaths and disabilities that are responsible for the loss of independence than any other disease.
